Welcome to English 9 & English 9 Honors
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This year will be both challenging and rewarding. English 9 is a complementary study of literature, writing, grammar and reading. The majority of the literature chosen is found in our textbook, McDougal Littell Literature, and will include various lengths of short stories, poetry and plays. Students are required to read outside class assignments. Students will work in groups and individually throughout the year on assignments, projects and presentations. Students are expected to read with perception, share ideas during class discussions and formal presentations, and to write clearly and correctly.
Students will study various genres of literature. They will engage in close readings of short stories, plays, poems, and essays which are worthy of scrutiny and critical response, both written and oral. In addition, this course will help develop students’ awareness of language and sharpen their skills in critical reading, thinking, and effective writing.

REQUIRED MATERIALS
- Textbook – One textbook, McDougal Littell Literature, is provided for each student in the classroom. On occasion, textbooks can be signed-out through the teacher; however, the student is responsible for the textbook and must return the textbook, in its original condition, on the following school-day.
- Binder and Homework Folder – This will help you to stay organized. Students should divide their binder into the following sections: Important Papers, Warm-Ups, Student Learning Maps, Notes, In-Progress Work, Completed Work. Students may leave their binders in the appropriate bin in the classroom so they do not have to carry them from class to class. A homework folder will help students keep their homework neat and organized.
- Lined paper – Loose-leaf paper or a notebook with a perforated edge is suggested since papers with rough edges will not be accepted.
- Pencils and Pens (blue or black) – Purchase a pack of pens and pencils and keep them in a safe place. Pens that are not blue or black should not be used for any assignment, test, quiz, etc.
- School Planner – This will be provided by William Penn and must be brought to class every day. No passes will be given without a student’s planner.
- Highlighter – Any color highlighter will be useful for this class.
