The Literacy Project
At William Penn, students receive reading instruction in all of their core classes (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies). Students will use learn and use the same set of skills throughout the four classes during their freshman year at Penn. This consistency in all of the core classes will reinforce the importance of these skills and ensure student success.
What are the skills?
- Reading Guides: These are guides that students will use during reading. The guides point out key vocabulary, provide additional support, and question the reader as they read.
- PALs: This is a structured activity where two students partner read a text. During PALs, students summarize, question (and answer), and practice oral reading to improve fluency and comprehension.
- CSET: This is a writing frame to help students make a claim and provide specific details from the text to support their claim. CSET stands for Claim, Support, Evidence, and Tie-up.
- Reciprocal Teaching: This is a structured activity where students take over their own learning by questioning and answering in small groups.
